Additional Opportunities

In partnership with Peterborough Symphony Orchestra (PSO), musicians of senior KYO ensemble have an opportunity to expand their learning through an orchestral apprenticeship program. KYO musicians receive mentorship from section principals and the PSO Music Director and rehearse and perform with the PSO.

Contact the KYO Artistic Director for further information.

Musicians in KYO ensembles have the opportunity to compete in our annual Concerto Challenge. The selected challengers will perform in concert as soloists during the regular KYO concert series.

Contact the Education Coordinator for details and an application form.

An annual masterclass series is led by some of Canada’s top professional musicians; public attendance is welcome at all masterclasses.

Enrichment workshops with facilitators from various performing arts streams are available for all KYO musicians. Musicians registered with KYO ensembles are eligible to participate in these enrichment and performance opportunities as part of their tuition. A small fee may be charged for public audience attendance. Donations in lieu of ticket fees are gratefully received and help us offset clinician booking fees.

If you wish to participate as a performer in a masterclass, contact our Education Coordinator.

Each season from December to March, KYO musicians participate in a composition project. Musicians learn techniques for composing melody and harmony, write new music for a small ensemble of various instruments, and discover personal and deeply meaningful creativity. Details about this program are provided in our annual Musician’s Handbook.

Every season the KYO awards merit-based scholarships to be applied toward furthering a musician’s music education. For scholarship information contact the Education Coordinator.

Fee bursaries are available for all students according to proven need. Further information is found in KYO Orchestras registration paperwork.

If you are interested in establishing or contributing to a Scholarship or Bursary fund, please contact the Board of Directors.
